Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSD). This condition is a chronic progressive disease and the symptoms can include swelling, pain, and changes in your skin. CRPS can be caused by an issue in your nervous system (central or peripheral).

While CRPS is most common in young women, it can affect people of any age and both males and females.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Symptoms

The most common symptom of CRPS or RSD is increasingly severe pain outside of the initial pain location. The pain will worsen over time. It will usually affect an extremity and have some of the following symptoms:

  • High sensitivity in your skin
  • Changes in your skin color, temperature, and texture
  • A burning pain
  • Swollen or stiffened joints
  • Hair and/or nail growth rate changes

There is no conclusive cause of CRPS/RSD, but many doctors attribute it to some sort of trauma to your affected extremity such as a gunshot, fracture, surgery or other event.
